Bayview Glen Track & Field Team

Dates: February 2002 - June 2002

Despite the praise I have for my high school, while I was attending Bayview Glen its athletics department was only beginning to come into its own. As such, there were limited resources and no dedicated specialists to train athletes. The school generally relied on faculty members and parents with specific skills to coach the school teams.

Fortunately for Bayview Glen, a number of students were extremely talented athletes that needed very little by way of support.
There were still, however, a larger number of students who didn't possess any natural skill but earnestly sought to play on school teams. Many of these gravitated towards track & field, as the individualist athleticism allowed them to train at their own pace; as a track athlete, one is primarily accountable to oneself. Without the pressure of "letting the team down", track & field can be a very social sport that athletes of any skill level can enjoy. However, those without any natural prowess need guidance if they wish to improve.
It was these aspirant athletes that made track & field fun. In my senior year, in addition to training and competing with the track team, I also moved into an assistant coaching position, helping three volunteer faculty members with their duties. While not an expert in the sport, I did possess considerable prowess in my own events and a good general knowledge of weight training and aerobic activities. I also actively studied various coaching manuals to develop a rigorous training schedule for students at all levels and in all events - specifically those athletes lacking in natural talent and in need of positive guidance. Finally, I compiled a comprehensive coaching guide towards the end of the season for future faculty coaches to use, with administrative templates, sample training schedules and event-specific advice. To my knowledge, this guide was used by coaches for at least one year after my graduation.

This is the Bayview Glen Track & Field Coaching Manual I developed throughout the season. I'm still particularly proud of this piece of work, despite all the time that's elapsed since. It was one of the first documents I wrote with an instructive purpose, which entailed adopting a learner's perspective and making things as accessible and practical as possible. I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise, as it called for administrative foresight and planning, versatility, clarity and concision. The intent was to make the guide so comprehensive that any volunteer faculty coach - regardless of any previous experience - could implement an effective coaching programme that would help enthusiastic students improve while providing support for natural athletes. I believe I accomplished the task with this document.
Administrative table templates to facilitate information management.
Sample training schedules for individual days, modeled directly off the day plans listed in the guide. With the coaching manual as a reference, a coach could design a full practice for an entire team in a matter of minutes.
